Summer's grip on the UAE is finally starting to loosen. Wednesday marks the September equinox, the astronomical moment when the sun crosses directly over the Earth's equator, and with it, the country officially steps into autumn. According to the National Centre of Meteorology, the shift will be gradual rather than dramatic. Average high temperatures at the start of the season are expected to hover around 39°C, with lows easing to a still-warm 26°C overnight. This year's autumn carries an added wrinkle: forecasters are tracking a strong El Niño pattern that is expected to persist through February 2027, potentially extending its influence into April. The upshot for the UAE is a season likely to bring close-to-average temperatures paired with an increased chance of rainfall compared to a typical year.

By early November, meteorologists project daytime highs easing further to around 31°C with overnight lows near 18°C — numbers that will feel like a welcome change after months of relentless summer heat. As the season progresses toward its end around the December solstice, highs are expected to fall to roughly 25°C, with nights dipping to a crisp 13°C, marking the UAE's most comfortable stretch of the year.

Humidity and Fog Still Part of the Picture

Before residents get too excited about cooler evenings, meteorologists caution that September itself remains a transitional month, with high humidity and foggy mornings likely to persist. Warm sea temperatures continue to drive evaporation, while seasonal wind patterns pull additional moisture into the atmosphere, a combination that can produce hazy, muggy mornings even as overall temperatures begin trending downward.

Experts from the International Astronomical Centre note that the seasonal transition unfolds gradually through September, with temperatures easing slowly as daylight hours shorten day by day. It's a subtle shift at first, one measured more in minutes of daylight lost than in dramatic swings on the thermometer, but it sets the stage for the more noticeable cooling that typically arrives by mid-autumn.

What Residents Should Expect

For UAE residents planning outdoor activities, the message is one of patience. While the equinox is a symbolic turning point, genuine relief from the heat is still several weeks away. Evening plans, outdoor dining and early-morning exercise routines are likely to become noticeably more pleasant by late October and into November, when both humidity and temperature begin to align with what most people picture as "autumn weather."

The forecast of increased rainfall this year, driven by El Niño, could also mean more frequent showers than residents have grown accustomed to in recent dry years — a development that authorities in flood-prone areas will be watching closely as the wetter season approaches.
