Aryna Sabalenka May Skip Future Dubai Tennis Championships Over Tournament Director's Criticism

Dubai, UAE — World No. 1 Aryna Sabalenka has hinted that she may skip future editions of the Dubai Tennis Championships following criticism from the tournament's director over her recent withdrawal.

The controversy began after Sabalenka and Iga Swiatek pulled out of the February tournament shortly before it started. In response, tournament director Salah Tahlak suggested that top players who withdraw late should face stricter penalties, including possible deductions in ranking points.

Sabalenka strongly disagreed with those remarks, calling them "ridiculous" and expressing disappointment over what she sees as a lack of support for players. She indicated that such comments could influence her decision about returning to the event in the future.

The Belarusian star stressed that player health must come first, especially given the demanding nature of the professional tennis calendar. With an intense schedule stretching across most of the year, many players are increasingly prioritising rest and recovery to avoid injuries and extend their careers.

Sabalenka had chosen to skip tournaments in Doha and Dubai earlier this season, a decision that ultimately paid off as she went on to win a major title at Indian Wells shortly afterward.

The issue has also sparked a broader debate within tennis about scheduling pressures and player welfare. While organisers aim to ensure strong participation from top-ranked players, athletes argue that the current system often overlooks their physical and mental well-being.
