Cristiano Ronaldo Scores 980th Career Goal as Al-Nassr Beat Diriyah 3-0

Cristiano Ronaldo marked the Saudi Pro League's return with a milestone, scoring the 980th goal of his career as Al-Nassr beat Diriyah 3-0 at Al-Awwal Park on Friday night.

The result lifted Al-Nassr level on 19 points with Al-Qadsiah at the top of the table, at least until the weekend's remaining fixtures are played. It also ended a 25-day international break on a high note for a side that had stumbled just before it, with a 1-1 draw away at Al-Khaleej.

A Goal With a Backstory

The week leading into the match was dominated by Ronaldo's falling-out with Jorge Jesus, the former Al-Nassr coach who now leads the Portuguese national team. Ronaldo left the national squad's camp midway through Portugal's Nations League fixtures, reportedly over complaints that promises about his role had not been kept.

Al-Nassr head coach Ange Postecoglou insisted that his captain's spirits were high. The evidence arrived quickly. In the 23rd minute, Kingsley Coman burst through the Diriyah defence on the break and cut inside to shoot. Goalkeeper Waleed Abdullah could not hold the effort, and Ronaldo was on hand to convert the rebound with a composed finish and head straight for the fans.

The timing gave the strike extra meaning. Ronaldo, the club captain, walked into Al-Awwal Park after a turbulent few days that had played out in public, and he answered it in the way strikers prefer: by being in the right place at the right moment.

Costa and Coman Complete the Job

Al-Nassr doubled their lead in the 36th minute. Joao Felix's curling corner found Samu Costa, whose downward header bounced off the turf and into the net. Felix had a chance to add a third before the break after a Ronaldo through ball set him clear, but he failed to convert, a reminder of a similar late miss in the draw at Al-Khaleej.

The match settled into a familiar rhythm after the interval. Al-Nassr dropped into a deeper 4-5-1 and gave up some of the high pressing that marks their fast starts, a shift that was hardly surprising given Postecoglou's public frustration with the club's congested schedule before the break. Diriyah, under Bruno Lage, enjoyed plenty of the ball in the second half but never seriously troubled goalkeeper Bento.

Coman sealed the win in the 77th minute, running onto Sadio Mane's pass on the counter and sliding a shot into the bottom corner.

Diriyah's 5-4-1 shape, built around the movement of Darwin Nunez, Adil Boulbina, Enzo Millot and Oscar Rodriguez, created space behind the Al-Nassr defence on several occasions. But they produced only one shot on target in the first half, and the visitors were punished for their lack of cutting edge.

Al-Qadsiah and Al-Ahli Also Win Big

Al-Nassr were not the only team to impress. Al-Qadsiah, billed as dark-horse title contenders, hammered Al-Kholood 5-0. Tijjani Reijnders opened the scoring in the fourth minute, and goals from Christopher Bonsu Baah and Musab Al-Juwayr made it 3-0 by half-time. Mateo Retegui added a fourth in the 67th minute, and Julian Quinones converted a penalty in the 86th.

In Al-Hasa, Al-Ahli beat Al-Fateh 4-0 on the home side's new coach Jamal Sellami's debut. Francisco Trincao scored in the 31st and 50th minutes, Ivan Toney claimed his 11th goal of the season in the 60th, and Ziyad Al-Johani wrapped up the scoring in the 89th.

The Wider Picture

The league's 25-day pause meant most clubs returned with fresh legs and, in several cases, fresh ideas. Al-Nassr's performance showed purpose rather than polish. Coman's pace in transition caused problems all night, Mane's pass for the third goal showed the quality that sits behind the front line, and Felix, despite his miss, played a central part in the build-up to two of the goals.

For Diriyah, the lesson was a familiar one. Territory and possession count for little without clear chances, and a single first-half shot on target is rarely enough to trouble a side with Al-Nassr's attacking depth.

What Comes Next

The weekend's fixtures could reshape the table again. On Saturday, Al-Hazem host Neom at 4:50 p.m., and Al-Ettifaq welcome Al-Khaleej in an Eastern Province derby at 5:55 p.m. The headline game follows at 9 p.m., when Al-Hilal host Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Clasico. A win for either side would lift them above both Al-Nassr and Al-Qadsiah.

For Ronaldo, the 980th goal brings him another step closer to the 1,000 mark that has been discussed for years. For Al-Nassr, the three points were just as important, restoring momentum after the break and keeping them in the title conversation.
