The countdown is on for one of the UAE's most significant transport milestones this year. Etihad Rail, the country's national passenger rail operator, will officially extend its network into Dubai on September 30, opening a new station that promises to reshape how residents move between the capital and the emirate.

The new station, named Al Yalayis Station, will connect directly with Abu Dhabi's Mohamed bin Zayed City station, cutting the journey between the two emirates down to approximately 57 minutes — a travel time that easily rivals, and at peak hours comfortably beats, the drive along Sheikh Zayed Road.

A Second Major Milestone for the National Network

The Dubai launch builds on a landmark moment earlier this year, when Etihad Rail's passenger service made its debut with the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah route on June 30, connecting Mohamed bin Zayed City with Fujairah in one hour and 45 minutes. That launch drew remarkable public interest, with more than 10,000 tickets sold before the service had even begun running, an early signal of just how much appetite there is among UAE residents for a fast, reliable rail alternative to the road network.

Now attention turns to Dubai, alongside Sharjah, which will see its own new station open on the same day. Al Dhaid Station in Sharjah will open in parallel with Al Yalayis Station on September 30, extending the reach of the network beyond the two emirates that launched the service in June.

What It Means for Commuters

For the hundreds of thousands of people who regularly travel between Abu Dhabi and Dubai for work, family visits or leisure, the new route offers a genuine alternative to driving. Etihad Rail's passenger trains operate at speeds of up to 200 kilometres per hour and come equipped with onboard Wi-Fi, power outlets and a choice of Comfort and Premium travel classes, positioning the service as a serious competitor to both private cars and inter-emirate bus routes.

Transport officials have also confirmed that Al Yalayis Station is being designed with the possibility of a future direct link to the Dubai Metro network, which would further ease onward travel for passengers arriving in the emirate without a car. Dedicated feeder buses have already been introduced at the Abu Dhabi end of the existing route, dropping passengers directly at Mohamed bin Zayed City station, and similar last-mile connectivity solutions are expected to be rolled out around the new Dubai and Sharjah stations.

Ticket Prices and Discounts

To encourage early adoption, Etihad Rail has kept its passenger fares deliberately accessible. Introductory pricing starts from Dh55 for Comfort Class and Dh120 for Premium Class — roughly half the standard adult fare the operator expects to charge once the network matures. On top of these headline rates, the operator has introduced a tiered discount structure: children between the ages of two and 17 receive a 50 per cent discount on regular fares, senior citizens aged 60 and above receive 20 per cent off, and infants under two travel free when accompanied by an adult.

Tickets can be booked through the Etihad Rail mobile app or via the official website, where passengers can check timetables, select seats and manage bookings. Given the strong demand seen on the Abu Dhabi–Fujairah route since launch, travel advisers are recommending that passengers book well in advance for the opening weeks of the Dubai service, particularly around weekends and public holidays. Passengers are also being reminded that Etihad Rail operates strict boarding cut-off times, with fares forfeited for anyone who misses their scheduled departure.

The Road Ahead for the National Network

Dubai and Sharjah are only the second stop on a much longer journey. Etihad Rail has laid out an ambitious rollout timeline for the rest of its passenger network: stations at Madinat Zayed and Liwa in the Al Dhafra region are scheduled to open on November 30, followed by further Al Dhafra stations at Al Sila, Al Dhannah and Al Mirfa on December 30. The currently announced final phase, a station serving Sharjah University City, is due to open in March 2027.

Once complete, the full passenger network will connect 11 cities and areas across the UAE via approximately 900 kilometres of track, forming one of the most ambitious national infrastructure projects the country has undertaken. Officials have framed the network not simply as a convenience for travellers but as a strategic piece of the UAE's broader sustainability and urban planning goals, aimed at easing road congestion and cutting emissions associated with inter-emirate car travel.

A New Era of Connectivity

For many residents, the opening of the Dubai station in a few weeks' time will mark the first real, practical experience of what national rail travel looks like in the UAE. Combined with the free baggage allowance Etihad Rail has introduced for all ticket types and the operator's clearly stated passenger conduct guidelines around dress and public health, the service has been designed from the outset to feel like a premium, modern alternative rather than a stripped-down commuter option.

As September 30 approaches, all eyes will be on how smoothly the Dubai launch goes — and on just how many of the emirate's residents choose to swap the steering wheel for a train seat on their next trip to the capital.
