AWS Still Can't Restore Bahrain and UAE Cloud Facilities Six Months After Iranian Strikes
Amazon Web Services confirmed it remains unable to restore full service to its Bahrain region and one of its three UAE availability zones, more than six months after Iranian drone and missile strikes caused structural damage during the early phase of the regional conflict.
Six Months On, Damage Still Exceeds Recovery Capacity
Amazon Web Services (AWS) disclosed on Tuesday that it remains unable to restore full operations at its cloud computing facilities in Bahrain and at one of its three availability zones in the UAE, more than six months after the sites sustained damage from drone and missile strikes linked to the broader Iran conflict. The update, posted to AWS's health dashboard, marked the company's first public status report on the situation since April.
According to the company, the damage sustained at multiple Bahrain-based sites exceeded what its regional and multi-availability-zone architecture is designed to withstand—an unusually candid admission from a hyperscale cloud provider about the physical limits of its infrastructure resilience.
What Happened in March
The disruptions trace back to early March 2026, in the initial weeks following the outbreak of hostilities between the United States, Israel, and Iran. At the time, AWS confirmed that two of its data-hosting zones in the UAE had been directly struck, while a separate drone strike near one of its Bahrain facilities caused significant physical damage, including structural harm, power failures, and water damage from fire-suppression systems.
The impact extended well beyond AWS's own infrastructure. Banking operations, payment platforms, and even ride-hailing services across the region reportedly experienced service interruptions in the immediate aftermath, illustrating how deeply integrated cloud infrastructure has become in everyday commercial and financial activity across the Gulf.
A Complicated Road to Recovery
For its UAE-based customers, AWS said most affected clients have successfully re-established operations by migrating to alternate regions, restoring from backups, or implementing workaround solutions to recover previously inaccessible data. The situation in Bahrain has proven far more complex. Damage there spanned several availability zones simultaneously, undermining the very redundancy models that cloud providers typically rely on to guarantee continuity during localised failures.
AWS said it continues working to replace the affected infrastructure and has committed to providing a further update on the UAE situation in the coming months, while a dedicated update on Bahrain operations is expected only in early 2027—more than a year and a half after the original strikes occurred.
Broader Implications for Gulf Cloud Infrastructure
The prolonged outage has reignited a wider conversation about the vulnerability of data centre infrastructure in active or recently active conflict zones, particularly as Gulf states race to position themselves as global hubs for artificial intelligence and cloud computing. Reports suggest the UAE is now revising plans for a major AI data-centre project in light of the attacks, including exploring the dispersal of facilities across multiple sites and the use of underground, blast-resistant construction methods for future builds.
This shift reflects a broader recalibration happening across the technology sector: infrastructure once designed primarily around efficiency and scale is increasingly being reassessed through the lens of physical security and geopolitical risk, a consideration that was largely absent from data centre planning until this conflict began.
