Dubai Police Warn of Rising Fake Employment & Visa Scams Targeting Residents

Dubai Police have issued an urgent alert to residents and job seekers about a significant increase in fraudulent employment agencies and fake visa services operating on social media. These scams, which promise jobs or domestic help, are resulting in substantial financial losses and data theft.

How the Scams Operate

Fraudsters create convincing profiles on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp, posing as licensed agencies. They advertise guaranteed job placements, work visas, or domestic worker recruitment, demanding upfront payments or deposits. After receiving the money, they cease all communication. In a recent case, a victim lost Dh10,000 after responding to a social media ad for domestic help.

Official Warnings and Legal Risks

Authorities emphasize that only agencies licensed by the Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation (MoHRE) are authorized to handle employment contracts and visas. Dealing with unlicensed entities not only risks financial loss but can also lead to legal penalties and immigration issues. Sharing personal data like passport or Emirates ID details can also expose victims to identity theft.

How to Protect Yourself: Key Tips from Dubai Police

To avoid becoming a victim, follow these essential precautions:

  • Verify Credentials: Always check the agency's official license with MoHRE before any engagement.
  • Avoid Upfront Payments: Legitimate employers or sponsors do not ask for deposits to secure a job or visa.
  • Use Official Channels: For domestic help, use MoHRE-approved Tadbeer centres or escrow payment systems.
  • Guard Personal Data: Never share sensitive information like passport copies or bank details with unverified contacts.

What to Do If You're Targeted

If you encounter a suspected scam, report it immediately through:

  • The Dubai Police smart app
  • The official eCrime platform
  • The police call center at 901

Public vigilance is the best defence. Dubai Police's #BewareOfFraud campaign continues to educate the community. Always verify offers that seem "too good to be true" and remember: if it requires payment upfront, it's likely a scam.
