Net-Zero  In a significant announcement during the COP29 summit, Mauro Gianetti, CEO and Team Principal of UAE Team Emirates, unveiled the team’s ambitious goal of achieving net-zero by 2030. The revelation, made at the FAB Pavilion, positioned the team as the first Professional Cycling Team to attain Carbon Neutrality, marking a milestone accomplished at the close of the 2023 season.

Mission Beyond Victory: A Commitment to Change

Driving Positive Social Impact and Environmental Consciousness

Gianetti, speaking on a panel, emphasized the broader mission of the team beyond winning races. He stated, “Since day one, our team’s mission has been about more than just winning bike races; we were created to become a vehicle for change.”

Strategic Approach: Annual Emission Reductions and Sustainability Programs: Net-Zero

Drastic Cuts in CO2 Across the Value Chain

The team’s net-zero objective involves yearly reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, contributing to global climate change mitigation. The strategic plan includes a substantial reduction of CO2 emissions throughout the entire value chain. By integrating eco-friendly practices such as optimized travel logistics, waste minimization, and adoption of energy-efficient technologies, the team aims to actively engage in environmental conservation.

Championing Environmental Awareness: Fans and Future Generations

Active Involvement in Community Initiatives and Rider Ambassadorship

UAE Team Emirates commits to community initiatives promoting environmental awareness among fans and sports enthusiasts. The team’s sustainability program not only focuses on mitigating its environmental impact but also involves riders as ambassadors for sustainability. This role includes inspiring younger generations to support the global movement towards sustainability.

Transparent Assessment: Third-Party Audit and Carbon Footprint Calculation

Financial Control Approach and Retrospective Mitigation Initiatives

To understand its current carbon footprint, the team commissioned a third-party audit. Using the Financial Control Approach, the team calculated both Scope 1 and 2 Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the entire 2022 season, totaling 224,980 CO2 TON. To address this, the team has invested in carbon-neutral activations, partnerships, and programs, supporting five international projects to obtain certification as a Carbon Neutral Company. This comprehensive approach showcases UAE Team Emirates’ commitment to sustainable practices and environmental stewardship within the professional cycling domain.
