A Larger Mission: Chief of Sustainability’s Vision

According to Matt Brown, Chief of Sustainability at Expo City, the farm aligns with the organization’s broader goal to address global issues like water scarcity and decarbonization. The concept of regenerative agriculture forms the foundation of this innovative farm.

Cultivating Organic Bounty: Expo City

The farm focuses on cultivating entirely organic food for humans, fodder, and animal forage. From alfalfa and millet to oats and barley, various varieties are grown, offering sustainable options for animal feed and soil protection.

Bio-Intensive Agriculture: Natural Pest Control

In collaboration with Emirates Bio Farm, the land adopts bio-intensive agriculture, featuring different crops grown in alternating rows. This approach promotes natural pest control as companion plants mutually protect one another.

Harnessing Biochar for Soil Enhancement

Utilizing biochar, an organic, woody waste burned without oxygen, the farm enhances soil moisture retention and agricultural productivity. This charcoal-like substance is a sustainable solution contributing to circular practices.

Adapting to Arid Conditions: Desert Plants and More

The farm introduces desert plants adapted to the country’s arid conditions, minimizing water consumption. Alongside these, medicinal plants and herbs like cassia italica and lawsonia inermis contribute to the diverse cultivation.

Innovative Hydroponics: Year-Round Food Production

Indoor hydroponic agriculture takes center stage, providing an efficient solution for small spaces. The vertical hydroponic farm produces 15 kgs of food year-round with water recirculation, reducing water consumption significantly.

Air Joule Technology: Extracting Water from the Air

Linked to the hydroponic room, the Air Joule system extracts water from the air using Metal Organic Frameworks (MOF). Powered by solar batteries, this innovative technology enhances sustainability in water usage.

Mushroom Cultivation from Coffee Grounds

Spent coffee grounds from local restaurants find a new purpose as a germinating ground for mushrooms. The temperature-controlled enclosure yields three varieties: lion’s mane, oyster, and chestnut.

Educational Workshops: Nurturing Awareness

The farm extends its impact beyond cultivation by hosting workshops and cooking classes. These initiatives aim to raise awareness about the diverse plants grown and educate people on their utilization, fostering a sustainable lifestyle.
