Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (Dewa) has not only achieved substantial savings but also set new benchmarks in water conservation through the successful implementation of innovative Smart Ball technology in 2023. This cutting-edge approach leverages disruptive technologies to identify and address leaks within the intricate network of underground water transmission pipelines.
Milestone in Leak Detection and Water Savings
Smart Ball technology, operational since April 2021, has emerged as a game-changer by effectively identifying and addressing 81 leaks in Dubai’s water transmission network by the end of 2023. The impact is profound, resulting in remarkable savings of 243 million gallons of water and Dh9.66 million.

The incorporation of disruptive technologies from the Fourth Industrial Revolution, including AI, drones, blockchain, and IoT, exemplifies a forward-thinking approach. The launch of the third phase of SCADA systems in 2023 further amplifies operational efficiency.
Smart Ball System: A Technological Marvel
At the heart of Dewa’s success is the Smart Ball system, a marvel of technology designed for efficient water infrastructure inspection. This system consists of a small-diameter sphere equipped with a highly sensitive acoustic sensor, driven by water flow within the network. It excels in detecting sounds indicative of leaks and identifying gas pockets or anomalies.
Efficient Data Analysis and Operation
Once extracted, the Smart Ball’s collected data undergoes meticulous analysis using advanced mathematical algorithms. The outcome is precise and valuable information detailing the locations of leaks, gas pockets, or anomalies. Notably, the Smart Ball exhibits remarkable efficiency, traversing transmission pipes at a speed of approximately 3 kilometers per hour and inspecting over 35 kilometers in a single day without disrupting water flow.
