Shops in Al Mulla Plaza remained closed on Sunday after a part of the shopping mall collapsed the previous evening, resulting in two individuals sustaining minor injuries.
Dubai’s Historic Shopping Center
One of the oldest shopping centers in Dubai, Al Mulla Plaza, houses retail outlets with an apartment block above. Fortunately, the incident did not affect the apartments, allowing residents access to their homes. However, Dubai Police have cordoned off the retail section.
Unaware Shoppers and Inspection
As Khaleej Times visited the plaza on Sunday, shoppers, unaware of the mishap, attempted to enter the mall as usual. Entry was prohibited, with officials seen inspecting the structure located on Al Ittihad road.
Mixed-Use Hub with a History: Al Mulla Plaza
Al Mulla Plaza, a popular mixed-use center, boasts 108 duplexes and 60 retail outlets. The incident prompted reassurance from residents, with some taking precautionary measures in response to the minor collapse.
Residents’ Response and Calm Atmosphere
Despite the incident, residents expressed calmness, stating that the overall situation was under control. Some families chose temporary relocation to hotels as a precaution. A back-door access point remained open for apartment block residents.
Government Response and Safety Measures: Al Mulla Plaza
The Government of Dubai Media Office reported that the collapse resulted from the improper storage of heavy materials. Swift action was taken to manage the situation, and authorities assured the safety of everyone, including workers and visitors. Minor injuries were reported for two individuals.
