In a significant announcement during the 28th United Nations Conference of the Parties (COP28), the Kingdom of Bahrain has pledged its dedication to a comprehensive national carbon neutrality strategy. This strategic initiative aims to achieve a notable 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2035, with an ambitious long-term goal of achieving zero carbon emissions by 2060.

Mohammad Mezal, Environmental Specialist at Bahrain’s Supreme Council, emphasizes the national action plan announced by King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa. This comprehensive plan outlines a three-pronged approach towards carbon neutrality by 2060, encompassing the development of a low-carbon economy, adaptation to climate change, and the creation of sustainable opportunities within the emerging green economy.

COP26 Commitment and Carbon Emission Mitigation

Mezal, speaking to the Emirates News Agency (WAM), underscores Bahrain’s commitment, as announced at COP26, to achieve a 30% reduction in carbon emissions by 2035. The Kingdom is actively investing in the green economy, directing efforts towards transforming and mitigating carbon emissions originating from seven key sources responsible for 80% of Bahrain’s total emissions.

Environmental Conservation Initiatives: COP28

In the realm of environmental conservation, Bahrain’s initiatives include providing incentives to reduce energy waste, promoting the use of new and renewable energy sources, and a noteworthy initiative to quadruple the number of mangrove trees. Since COP26, 400,000 trees have already been planted, and Bahrain aspires to plant an impressive 1.6 million trees by the year 2035.
